Web presence and the always-nebulous "search engine optimization (SEO)"

We get a lot of calls from companies, large and small who want help creating a new web site. Most company's sites suck, quite frankly.

Let it be known that we don't do "web sites." We help companies develop a web presence. The difference is in the strategy.

A web presence provides education while a website only offers information. A web presence is scientifically developed, a website is artistically created.  A web presence is strategic, a website is only tactical.
A web presence generates revenue while a website generates interest.

Your web presence may require a portal where all kinds of web activities are accessed, or it may include many microsites for specific purposes or initiatives. Additionally, Intranets where internal employees or customers may collaborate, communicate and crowd-source may also need to be in your strategic road-map toward developing a proper online presence.

SEO is another longer conversation, but suffice it to say I think most SEO companies are overcharging at best, scams at worst. You can't buy "SEO" as a product. It's a process that requires lots of strategic planning, testing, quality content and ongoing refinement. That, we do.
